It’s in the little things

Happy International Youth Day!

In November I attended a Christian higher education summit in Hong Kong. It was a dynamic meeting with powerful people discussing important and lofty issues at a very high level.

During a coffee break, in a circle of 2 or 3 people, I casually mentioned how some of the brightest, passionate and most motivated young people in emerging African markets have no opportunity. An Indonesian businessman replied,

“I have a Christian University in Jakarta, send me 10 students and I will scholarship them.”

Less than 9 months later, there were smiles on faces mingled with tears from mums, sisters and brothers. Bittersweet goodbyes and looking ahead to new opportunities as these Indonesia UPH 2016 scholars took off to meet up with another 5 from Uganda. They have just begun a 3-year journey where I am confident God will work wonders in their lives.

One moment of a person being obedient to God’s leading can have incredible ripple effects in the lives and eternal destinies of others. I am humbled by the opportunity to have been part of this journey in a small way, and blessed to see fruit come from opportunity in such a short time.

I don’t know what else will come out of the Hong Kong summit, but I know these bright young people are poised to make a difference in their lives and others.

Let’s be sensitive to the “little things”—the comments, decisions and choices we can make in the midst of our big, busy lives. Because God inhabits that space and He wants to speak to us there.
