‘What do I do with my life?’ It’s a question we all must wrestle with at some point. This foundational inquiry can appear in any season of life but feels particularly urgent when we cross that threshold into adulthood. A version of the Japanese concept of ikigai serves as a solid place to start.
Ikigai doesn’t have a literal English word pairing, but generally means ‘a reason for being.’ You’ll notice ikigai is the sweet spot – the intersection of what you love, what you’re paid for, what you’re good at, and what the world needs.
Where would you place yourself on the diagram at this stage in your life?
If you’re a Christ-follower there’s also a deeper element of what you feel like the Lord is guiding you to. Wherever you land, there’s always time to make a change. If you’re not where you want to be, reach out to a trusted friend or mentor and brainstorm with them how you can make a practical shift in your life to move you closer to the fulfilling life you envision.
